Moreover, the water vapor can contaminate the fuel inside the tank. Contaminated fuel can damage the engine of any machinery or vehicle. You might notice that your car will not start. Understand the Causes of Condensation
In order to avoid condensation and rust, understand first why condensation forms in gas tanks. It is normal for condensation to form eventually in a gas tank due to the changes in temperature. Friction is created between the hot road and the car when driving on the road. The heat transfer combines with the colder gasoline, creating condensation in your fuel tank. Condensation accumulates on the inner walls of the fuel tank until it forms into droplets. These drops of water will fall and mix into the fuel any time.
Another thing that causes condensation is water vapor. Air holds a certain amount of water vapor, so the fuel tank must contain as little air as possible. If you can limit the quantity of air inside your fuel tank, you can decrease condensation as well.
Fuel tanks must be full or almost full of fuel
You should always fill your tank with fuel that is over three-quarters to a half full. You should fill it up regularly and don’t let your tank run low on fuel. By doing this, the surface area within your tank where condensation could form is reduced. This is a good thing to practice especially when there is a huge change in temperature during wet or humid weather.
Apply some fuel additive
Gas weigh lighter than water. So, when there is condensation, the gas or fuel will just float on top of it and not mix with it. The water from the condensation can accumulation and stay at the bottom of the fuel tanks, which can cause it to rust eventually.
In the past, the fuel used by people did not have the amount of ethanol that it contains today. Today, the fuel we are using has 10% ethanol to the least, which combines well with water. Ethanol has the ability to take the moisture caused by condensation in the tank to the engine, where it will be burned up. You may also want to use a fuel additive, which you can buy from a local automotive store, if you the fuel you are using does not contain a good portion of ethanol.
To use the additive, follow the directions written on the container. You can simply pour the additive directly into the fuel tank. The additive is similar to ethanol and therefore works like ethanol when mixed with pure gasoline, reducing the condensation in the tank. You will not have to worry about condensation in your fuel tank if you’re using gas that contains ethanol or use fuel additives.
